Plains Zinnia (Zinnia grandiflora)

Plains zinnia

Plains Zinnia is a small (4-12 inch) shrub that grows among desert scrub, in grasslands, and along roadsides in dry soil at elevations from 4,000 to 6,000 feet. Its attractive yellow flowers have orange centers and last almost all season, drying and turning papery in fall. The plant spreads by underground rhizomes and often forms small colonies. Although difficult to transplant, it is valued as a groundcover and often used in borders because it is drought tolerant and cold hardy.
